Septic Systems

Approximately 1.5 million homes in New York State are served by septic systems. Septic systems are a potential source of pollution, such as pathogens, nutrients, and some toxic chemicals. Many homes have failing septic systems, and septic systems are often not properly maintained by homeowners.

Research shows that many homeowners do not know who has authority with respect to septic systems, and they are often confused about where to go for help. For these reasons, the Water Quality Extension Program helps to educate homeowners throughout New York State about septic system maintenance and ground water protection.
